We've invested a lot of time and years to perfecting Puff Embroidery otherwise known 3D Embroidery & it's still one of our customers favourite choices.

If you’ve not already heard of Puff embroidery also known as 3D Embroidery. It’s a technique, which allows you to raise the surface of your designs, making them essentially three-dimensional. 3D Foam can give your designs a complete creative boost, transforming them completely. However some parts of the technique may be a little tricky so not all designs are possible. Size and design are critical when making sure you get the best effect for Puff Embroidery.

Puff embroidery is a technique where foam is inserted under the top stitch to raise the surface, giving a three-dimensional look to your embroidery designs. The 3D foam effect is commonly used on garments that don’t require much washing. Apparel like caps, jackets and other outerwear are pieces that are best suited for this technique.

THINGS TO BE AWARE OF WHEN ATTEMPTING TO USE 3D FOAM:
Typically the design plays a huge part, if the design is too intricate, small or design is too closely spaced the design will not work. If the design is too thick the thread will not have the best coverage over the foam base.

Foam colour is also important: it is best to use the same colour as your top thread as any excess foam would be less visible.

Subject matter is also important: 3D foam works best with satin stitching. If the object you want to raise can’t be digitized in satin, then you shouldn’t use foam. Carefully select the right garments for these types of embroidery, they work best and last much longer on items which are typically washed.

Not all logos work for 3D Embroidery

When it comes to applications for 3D Embroidery or applications to go on headwear there's certain limits you will have. 

Cap structure: Some hats dont have enough structure to apply a 3D logo but on the other hand some caps are too ridged to take the embroidery needed. 

​Embroidery Style: Big logos, Badges and Backfill designs will hugely increase the cost per unit. 

​Cap height: not all hats can take the same size logo. The front portion of the cap will vary across brands and styles. Therefore Logos need to be in proportion when reduced. 

​Logo Type: Sometimes you will have to encorporate a mixture of 2D & 3D Embroidery. Logos that are too thin will only be processed as 2D Embroidery. Logos too thick will not hold the 3D Embroidery correctly. 

FEAR NOT EMBROIDERY ISNT THE ONLY OPTION:

We did invest in a pretty cool cap press for all printed transfers, silicone and PU Transfers also. So if you arent feeling the threadable options why not speak with our team about printing onto cpas.

Branded Beanies: Always a winner

on the cuff off the cuff, who cares, we can embroidery anywhere. We have some limitations on size but why not take a look at our applications sizes page for details on that.

If embroidery isnt your thing, we can produce custom made jaquard beanies and or add patch and/or badges to your products too.

Do you have set up fees

Yes, DST set ups are charged at £25, you can supply your own although if your logo doesnt work perfect on our machines additional fees are charged.
You dont own your DST fiels a release fee of £35 is chargeable should you wish to own these. If you have paid a fee this may be subtracted fromt he charge above.

Do you have minimums

Yes 24 units per design, although we can run thread colours in multiples of 8 units.

Our machines only run in multiples of 8 units.

We do run single unit rates at £25 flat rate. (plus DSTs and delivery)

how long do you take

Turn around times are estimated at 14 working days from artwork approval. All subject to quantites number of applications per product and internal schedule. if you have a date please let us know prior to ordering.

Can i see my design before placing my order?

We can do visuals once the order is placed.

Can you add labels

Yes we can add these if you have your own. Alternatively we can provide labels to suit.

Can you change the thread colours

Yes you can change colours but there is  fee for the change and there must be changes in multiples of 8. We also have a maximium of 15 thread colours per logo.

What artwork files are best

Always opt for AI, but why not check our artwork help link.

is 3D Embroidery Expensive

Depends on the size and detail of the design. Not all designs can be done in 3D Embroidery, its always best to check first.

Why is 3D different

The 3D foam technique is different to standard flat embroidery in the following ways:

  • Capping – Where the top stitch is not covering the foam, a separate object is created to cap the corners usually running in a perpendicular direction.
  • Securing stitches – These are needed to hold two objects together.
  • Stitch density – Spacing between penetrations needs to be denser to help cut and cover the excess foam
  • Top thread tension – This is usually loose when stitching a foam design.

Fonts and basic shapes are commonly used. More Pull Compensation is needed for the thickness of the foam.

Starting with:

Looking for caps and headwear embroidery pricing?

Artwork files are charged at £25 per logo. Set-up fees are per size and application style (2D set-up or 3D set-up). Set-up fees are a one-off cost.

There is a minimum order requirement of 24 units per design, and then orders can be placed in multiples of 8 units thereafter. We also offer the option to purchase single units, and you can find sample pricing on our webstore. This rate will be valid for orders up to a minimum of 24 units per design.

If you require thread changes per design, it is possible, but you will need to order multiples of 8 units per color change. For example, if you purchase 24 units of a design, you could split the order into:

16 units in black thread and 8 units in white thread
OR
8 units in black thread, 8 units in white thread, and 8 units in red thread.
Our pricing breaks are based on the quantity per design:

24 units or more
96 units or more
192 units or more

Yes we can even add woven labels to personalise your order.
